Students Dive Into Archival Research and CMU History With Archives Instruction

From First-Year Writing support to workshops and consultations, the Libraries delivers instruction across campus in a variety of ways. In the University Archives, Collections Archivist Emily Davis, Community Collections Processing Archivist Crystal Johnson, and Robotics Project Lead Archivist Kathleen Donahoe have introduced students of all levels and disciplines to archival research through a variety of class sessions across CMU and the wider Pittsburgh community.

And in the frenzy of navigating new classes, new friends, and a new city, they may not think to explore the resources the University Libraries makes available to them at the beginning of their academic journey.

Summer Institutes in Computational Social Science Applications Open

This May, the University Libraries will host a Summer Institutes in Computational Social Science (SICSS) session in Pittsburgh. Led by Social Sciences Librarian Di Yoong and Open Knowledge Librarian Emily Bongiovanni, SICSS aims to bring together graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, staff and faculty interested in exploring computational methods through interdisciplinary work.

AI as a Teaching Tool: Transforming Coding Literacy in the Libraries

With the advent of generative AI, universities all over the country are reassessing their approach to both teaching and learning. And while Carnegie Mellon University Libraries already has many resources to help members of our community understand AI, it’s also on the cutting edge of figuring out how AI can support students and faculty alike; as a result, Libraries faculty and staff have begun integrating AI into areas they already support — with a new programming workshop powered by AI serving as an example.
