Sloan Foundation Funds Launch of ENGIN Software Foundation at Carnegie Mellon University to Support Academic Open Source

Carnegie Mellon University Libraries Associate Dean for Digital Infrastructure G. Sayeed Choudhury has received a grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation to launch the Ecosystem for Next Generation Infrastructure (ENGIN) Software Foundation. This two-year initiative represents the next strategic phase of the Carnegie Mellon University Open Source Programs Office (OSPO), housed within the University Libraries. The ENGIN Software Foundation (ESF) aims to fill a critical and widely recognized gap in the academic open source ecosystem.

Keith Webster Elected to OCLC Board of Trustees

Carnegie Mellon University Libraries is pleased to announce that Keith Webster, the Helen and Henry Posner, Jr. Dean of University Libraries, has been elected to the OCLC Board of Trustees. OCLC is a global nonprofit library cooperative that provides shared technology services, original research, and community programs for libraries worldwide. Its Board of Trustees helps guide the organization’s strategic direction and ensure its ongoing impact.

Mellon, Hewlett Support Values-Enacted Leadership Institute

In August 2024, the Mellon Foundation awarded a three-year, $650,000 grant to the University of Oregon to support a new institute aimed at transforming the culture of leadership in higher education: the Values-Enacted Leadership Institute (VELI). In January 2025, the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation contributed another $650,000. Associate Dean for Academic Engagement Nicky Agate, who has worked alongside Christopher P. Long, provost and senior vice-president at the University of Oregon and VELI Principal Investigator as a part of the HuMetricsHSS initiative for the past eight years, will lend her expertise in workshop facilitation, community building, and open science principles to the project.
