Banned Books Week began in 1982 as a response to a rise in censorship and the growing number of challenged books within libraries, schools, and bookstores. The theme for Banned Books Week 2026 (October 4-10) is “Let Books Be. Protect the Freedom to Read.”

I heard the story of Jewell Parker Rhodes seeing a book display in Hunt Library that featured Gayle Jones, an African American writer.
