This summer, the University Libraries took an all-hands-on-deck approach to showcase things the CMU community can do in and around the library. At the annual Libraries gathering on July 31, faculty and staff joined together to record 125 short-form videos highlighting physical and virtual spaces, resources, services, and activities.

On Friday, August 22, new and returning students and other CMU community members gathered in various locations throughout Hunt and Sorrells libraries to participate in orientation information sessions. The sessions covered a variety of areas that live within the Libraries, including the University Archives, the Sustainability Initiative, Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation, and the Integrative Design, Arts, and Technology network (IDeATe).

At the University Libraries, the Data and Code Support service offers specialized, one-on-one assistance for students, faculty and staff using open source coding languages and data science tools in their research or projects. The University Libraries offers a variety of resources to help the CMU community master coding in open source programming languages and common data science tools, from workshops to recorded lessons available on YouTube. Special Collections, CMU’s repository for rare books, manuscripts, and early calculating devices and cryptographic machines, is a unique campus resource that illuminates the history of science and technology. Thanks to an $8 million commitment from the Posner Foundation of Pittsburgh, the University Libraries is transforming the Posner Center into a dedicated Special Collections library, updating and expanding the space in order to engage the CMU and greater Pittsburgh community on a wider scale.
