On Wednesday, September 17, the CMU community gathered in Hunt Library to celebrate Constitution Day with a hands-on, drop-in workshop. Hosted by the University Libraries and the Office of Community Engagement and Leadership Development, the event invited attendees to craft their very own pocket-sized U.S. Constitution by decorating the cover and personalizing the pages. Visitors could then take home this unique keepsake that connected them to the nation’s founding document.
Representatives from the League of Women Voters were on-site to help new Pennsylvania voters get registered. Snacks and refreshments were provided to add to the celebration.
The Libraries’ annual Constitution Day program commemorates the signing of the U.S. Constitution on September 17, 1787, and fulfills the federal requirement for educational programming at institutions that receive federal funding. The Libraries has marked this occasion since 2005, with past programs exploring topics like gerrymandering, voting rights, and the Civil War Amendments. The Libraries also holds an original printed copy of the Bill of Rights in Special Collections.
