On Wednesday, January 29, more than 75 members of the CMU community gathered at Hunt Library to celebrate the first day of the Lunar New Year. Attendees kicked off the Year of the Snake with traditional Lunar New Year activities, including fortune telling, Chinese zodiac animal hand puppets, origami, and enjoying dumplings and other treats. Everyone who attended also received a lucky red envelope, which symbolizes good luck and prosperity.
The event was organized by Arts and Humanities Librarian Lynn Kawaratani and events manager Erin Swift, who were excited to offer students a chance to celebrate this widespread holiday.
“Lunar New Year is one of the most important holidays in Asia, and many of our students are not able to be home with their families to celebrate,” Kawaratani said. “We wanted to create a festive gathering here in the Libraries.”
