Changing Authentication Methods for Dimensions
Beginning on Friday, February 05, CMU users of DImensions will be asked to login using the CMU Shibboleth authentication method. Current users who use the Dimensions authentication method have been contacted to save any saved searches, favorites, or account settings prior to the change. Anyone with questions about how to save their saved searches, favorites or account settings should contact David Scherer and Matthew Marsteller.

Forthcoming Scholarly Communication Workshops
The University Libraries will be hosting a  number of forthcoming workshops focused on Scholarly Communications this Spring. These workshops are offered each semester on a variety of topics, and are designed to help attendees learn a new skill, deepen their understanding of a specific topic, or gain exposure to an unfamiliar technology, tool, or technique.

All workshops are available at no charge and are open to Carnegie Mellon University students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends. Workshops will be delivered virtually, via a Zoom link emailed to participants before the session. Seating is limited and registration is required.​

Figshare Releases GitHub Upload Action
To help automate the publication step in Git-Hub research workflows, Figshare has released the Figshare upload GitHub Action. This new action allows CMU authors to incorporate the upload ActIon into their GitHub workflows and push their files into KiltHub directly from GitHub. For additional information on the Figshare upload GitHub Action, please read this information.

Open Access and the Global South
In a recent publication from the Scholarly Kitchen, Biologist Haseeb Irfanullah discusses how the barriers blocking full global participation in open access publishing can be overcome with a focus on clear actions beyond merely expanding inclusion.

FigshareFest 2021 Recordings
On Wednesday, January 20 Figshare held its first ‘Figshare Fest' of 2021. The event included an introduction and product update from founder and CEO, March Hahnel, as well as talks from the figshare community on FAIR data curation, the State of Open Data 2020, and the use of the API for usage statistics reporting and analysis. The event recordings are live and can be viewed here.

Shearer Responds: 'Repositories are Critical'
In, 'Don't believe the hype: repositories are critical for ensuring equity, inclusion and sustainability in the transition to open access,' Executive Director of COAR, Kathleen Shearer, responded to recent comments made by CEO of Springer Nature, Frank Vrancken Peeters in a presentation given at the Academic Publishing in Europe Conference. In short, Shearer reiterated that:

  • Open Access Repositories support Open Access and Open Science
  • There is very little difference from an Author Accepted Manuscript (AAM) and the formatted PDF version
  • Open Access Repositories can easily link to content housed elsewhere
  • Articles deposited to repositories can be made discoverable through major discovery systems
