In this month’s selection of books, we look at the subjects and stories of migration, immigration and refugees. While not officially labeled a sanctuary city, Pittsburgh has strong ties to the fight for inclusion and equality of displaced people, with Mayor Bill Peduto commenting “Pittsburgh has historically been a home for refugees and immigrants and will continue to be one.” Pittsburgh is also the location for City of Asylum, a nonprofit organization that houses writers exiled from their home countries due to controversial writing. The organization became the headquarters for the International Cities of Refuge Network (ICORN) in 2016. Carnegie Mellon University is home to a large international student community, and its Office of International Education (OIE) has long been committed to the advocacy and facilitation of international and cross-cultural experiences on campus.
