Hello readers! I hope everyone had a lovely Tartan Community Day and a great Halloween. Because I currently have braces, I was able to easily dress up as Eliza Thornberry this year. Did anyone have any cool, data-themed costumes? If so, send pictures to me and I'll feature you in the next issue of Tartan Datascapes!
Tartan Datascapes is a biweekly blog featuring snapshots of the data landscape across the entire Carnegie Mellon University campus, from researchers in the College of Fine Arts to the School of Computer Science. Each snapshot will feature an individual researcher or research team and highlight how their work contributes to the broader datascapes of CMU. Researchers from across the spectrum of domains are doing amazing work with data at our institution, and Tartan Datascapes is a great place to read about this work!
Featured with each blog are quick tips for managing your data through research data management (RDM) techniques, and information on how the University Libraries can assist you with your myriad data needs through workshops, outreach, and consultations!

Folks, we’re right in the thick of the semester. How is everyone doing so far? Are you staying hydrated and getting enough sleep?
Let's do a quick exercise together:
As you are reading this, are you clenching your jaw? If so, unclench it!
Welcome to the second issue of Tartan Datascapes! This week, I'll be discussing a topic that is seemingly simple, but heavily complex: what are data? But first, let me start with a brief note:
