Register for Three Minute Thesis

Register for 3MT

Are you a PhD Student? Think you can describe your research and its importance in 3 minutes? Register for the 2020 3MT Competition. Registration ends February 26, 2020.

Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) is an internationally recognized competition that challenges PhD students to present a compelling oration on their thesis and its significance in just 3 minutes, in language that anyone can understand. 3MT is not an exercise in trivializing or ‘dumbing-down’ research but requires students to consolidate their ideas, crystallize their research discoveries and capture the imagination of their audience.

Who's eligible to compete? CMU doctoral candidates. Come one, come all.

Why compete?  Meet peers from around CMU and hear about what they're doing. (Very) good chance to win research/travel grants or technology prizes and gain early career recognition.

What happens next? Start practicing. All 3MT registrants will be scheduled to compete in preliminary rounds. All rounds run from 5:00 – 6:30pm in the Sorrells Library. All preliminary round dates are listed on the 3MT website. Preliminary Round winners win their choice of $1,000 towards a research/travel grant or credit to the University Computer Store.

Additionally, in collaboration with the Global Communication Center (GCC), the Libraries there will be several workshops geared towards students interested in participating in this year’s competition.

Then what? CMU's 2020 3MT Championship. Winners of preliminary rounds will compete for $500-$3000 in research/travel grants in the Three Minute Thesis Championship. The Championship will be held on Tuesday, April 7, from 5:00 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. in Kresge Theater, CFA Building.
