Shoots of Green

Shoots of Green: Innovations at CMU
Hunt Library, First Floor Exhibit Cases
April 16 – July 20

“Shoots of Green: Innovations at CMU” is an exhibit celebrating Pamela McCorduck’s 1979 exploration of Artificial Intelligence, “Machines Who Think: A Personal Inquiry into the History and Prospects of Artificial Intelligence.” The book is a survey of the bourgeoning field, featuring interviews with thought leaders of the time, many of whom called the Carnegie Mellon Department of Computer Science their professional home. With this exhibit, we celebrate her work and her contributions to the history of AI, a field that is central to the identity and culture of CMU. The exhibit takes its name from this quote from the book, “In the 1990s, shoots of green broke through the wintry AI soil.”

Pamela McCorduck recently donated a gift of 50+ important items in the history of computing, including calculating machines, letters and books. Read more about the Traub-McCorduck Collection.
